GOLD Leadership Certificate Program Guide

Requirements for Earning Bronze, Silver, Gold, Sapphire, Opal, Emerald & Ruby Certificates

Mission : Geneseo Opportunities for Leadership Development (GOLD) seeks to prepare students for leadership roles and responsibilities in service to the college and community. Our mission is accomplished through education, development, and training in an extensive series of individual workshops, institutes, and activities in the GOLD Leadership Certificate Program.

GOLD Accounts : GOLD programs are free and open to the entire campus community. You may register and attend workshops at any time they are offered with the option to earn seven leadership certificates. Individual personal GOLD accounts must be established at http://gold.geneseo.edu in order to register for workshops and view attendance and certificate records 24/7.

Bronze, Silver & Gold Core Leadership Certificates : Students interested in earning certificates are encouraged to begin working on the Bronze Life Skills Leadership Certificate, the Silver Practicing Leadership Certificate and the Gold Personal Leadership Model Certificate. The bronze, silver, and gold certificates are awarded sequentially, but workshops may be completed at any time.

Specialized Leadership Certificates (Sapphire, Opal, Emerald & Ruby) : Four optional and specialized leadership certificates are also available and may be earned independently of the bronze, silver, and gold certificates. The Sapphire Volunteerism and Service Leadership Certificate, the Opal Diversity & Cultural Competency Leadership Certificate, the Emerald Employee Development Leadership Certificate, and the Ruby Leadership in the Information Age Certificate are options that you may earn at any time you are enrolled as a student or are affiliated with SUNY Geneseo.

Fifty-six is the Answer: The question is, “What is required to complete all seven certificates?” The formula 7c x 8s = 56h represents seven certificates over eight semesters for a total of 56 one-hour workshops. Not bad and not overwhelming! The best strategy to complete the formula at your own pace is to use free time during the all-college hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays to take the one-hour GOLD workshops anytime during eight college semesters. All seven leadership certificates have a similar format and similar requirements. Each certificate has a combination of four required workshops and four optional workshops. In order to earn each certificate, you must complete a total of eight workshops and submit a journal reflection for each workshop. In addition, the gold certificate requires the submission of a Personal Leadership Model.

Do’s and Don’ts : Check the posted spring schedule on the GOLD web site beginning January 1 and register for spring workshops. All on-campus students will also receive the catalogs in their residence hall rooms at the beginning of each semester. Required workshops fill quickly. Drop workshops you cannot attend no later than midnight the night before a workshop. Two missed workshops may inactivate your account and deregister you from all future workshops. Many workshops are designated for multiple certificates but you must select the applicable certificate when registering. No double dipping is permitted.

The Big Picture: Pleasetake a few minutes to read and scan the brief descriptions of each of the seven leadership certificates. Workshop titles are included to give you a visual depiction of requirements and options in each certificate. An asterisk * indicates workshops that are required to earn a certificate. Workshops are typically offered at least once every academic year, but not every semester. In the schedule of workshop descriptions, the title line will also indicate all applicable certificates. You will need to select the certificate option when registering for a workshop. Workshop titles may vary slightly from the list below. Titles are added as needed and may not appear on the list, but each title will have designated certificate credit.
