Here I am in charge of the program and nobody told me what to do! Which comes first, the program or the room? Who should do the planning? How far in advance do we make arrangements? How much money do we need? Who does the setup for the program? Where do I go for help? This session is a must for anyone planning any type of program. Come and learn the basics of program planning such as knowing when and where to do a program, promoting an event on a shoestring, planning for the comfort of your audience, hosting a guest speaker or artist, and evaluating the program.

A leader’s effectiveness is enhanced by his or her ability to try on different “lenses” when looking at problems facing his/her organization. This process, according to Lee Bolman and Terrance Deal, is called “reframing.” Reframing requires vision, flexibility, and a commitment to the organization’s core values. This workshop will review the four lenses for organizational management described by Bolman and Deal, and will offer participants the opportunity to learn which lens is best to use in a given situation.

During Spring 2008, Geneseo students will be volunteering to tutor and read to school age children at Wilson Commencement Park which is a transitional housing and support services program in Rochester.  This session will include information about Wilson Commencement Park and its connection to the life and legacy of Dr. King.

New students in the GOLD program may earn silver certificate credit by registering for this program, obtaining a special form at the GOLD Student Organization Expo Fair Table, visiting at least ten specific services, obtaining signatures, and returning the form prior to the conclusion of the fair. During the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, Dave Dennis was a Freedom Rider and the Mississippi Director of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). He worked with SNCC members and other civil rights activists in Mississippi on voter registration and in organizing "Freedom Summer" in 1964. Dennis is currently Director of Community and Site Development for the Algebra Project, an organization founded by civil rights activist, Bob Moses, to improve minority children’s mathematics education.

 Students will have an opportunity to select two workshops from three choices: The Leadership Grid, The Situational Leadership Model, and Motivation; hear a keynote presentation from the management staff at Paychex; and attend a training session on Interviewing and Job Search Essentials. The conference includes all materials, breakfast and lunch. Students from Nazareth, St. John Fisher, Brockport and Geneseo will be participating in the conference. A registration fee of $10.00 is required and must be paid to GOLD and returned to the MacVittie College Union Room 353 by Noon on January 25. Registration is limited to eleven students from SUNY Geneseo and will be on a first come, first serve basis. Transportation to the West Henrietta site is the responsibility of the individual students. Attendance to this conference will count as one gold level of credit.

Communication is the critical ingredient in efforts to improve quality, encourage innovation and initiative, and build productive teamwork. But good communication skills don’t come naturally. People may possess the technical skills required of their jobs, but need help with the interpersonal aspect of getting the job done. In this session, you will learn to open discussions in a way that encourages others to participate, promote a free exchange of innovative ideas and information, and summarize agreements and action steps so that all involved understand what needs to happen next.

This session is based on the cutting edge research on leadership identity development published in November 2005 by the American College Personnel Association. It has been added to the requirements of the Gold Leadership Certificate to assist students in developing the required Personal Leadership Model.

In this session, students will learn to find "hidden" web pages, and become skeptical investigators and sophisticated searchers. GOLD is initiating a new series of workshops on how leadership is practiced in other cultures. Our first program will focus on American Indian leadership. Villages within the Iroquois Confederacy had, and still have, very unique forms of leadership. The communal, matrilineal, and spiritual aspects of their villages make their traditional views on leadership very different than the system exercised by many other places in the world, including the United States. The session will be moderated by a scholar who has devoted his academic career to studying Native American Indian culture. Panelists will include invited guests from the Iroquois Confederacy.

The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), developed by Kouzes & Posner in their best leadership practices research and published in their award-winning book The Leadership Challenge, is the focus of this required workshop. Students will complete the self-assessment inventory, obtain feedback from peers, and compare their leadership practices with the norms established in national studies of college students. Mandatory follow-up LPI Part II sessions are scheduled on March 3, March 4 and March 5 (register for only one of the three available sessions). Students taking this workshop must be engaged in at least one organization or group.

Deliberative Dialoguing is a technique that allows people with differing viewpoints to reach common ground, i.e., find those points on which they agree without trying to persuade or coerce each other to change their basic stances. Deliberative Dialogues (DDs) use a specific structure and a trained facilitator to keep discussions on track. DDs are successful as one-time events, for class discussions on controversial topics, and for organizations making decisions. Facilitators who are trained at this workshop are welcome to assist with campus-wide DDs, as well as using the techniques in other settings.

This annual awards ceremony will include a variety of leadership awards to student organizations and student leaders such as: The President’s Outstanding Achievement Awards for Student Organizations; GOLD Outstanding Advisor Award; Who’s Who in American Colleges Awards; Student Association Leadership, Service & Diversity Awards; PATH Awards; and GOLD Leadership Certificate Program Recipients. Students who have earned, or expect to earn, leadership certificates this academic year, and who wish to receive the certificates at the ceremony, should register for this event in advance. All other students earning certificates may pick up the certificates in MacVittie 353 after April 30.
